Congratulations to the Washington Capitals for winning their first Stanley Cup.  The event provided an in-direct measure of crowd size in our nation’s capital, allowing for comparison with other large crowds attending events of interest there. The measure reported was “passenger trips” taken on the city’s subway system (the Metro) on those particular days.

612,000- Is typical week day ridership.

840,145- For the parade in celebration of the Washington Capital’s Stanley Cup victory on a Tuesday.

1,000,000 (one million) – For the “Women’s March on Washington”, on a Saturday, which was the second heaviest usage day ever.

1,100,000- For President Barak Obama’s first Inaugural (1/20/09, which was a Tuesday), the heaviest usage day ever.

570,557- President Trump’s Inauguration (1/20/17, which was a Friday)

Five of the top ten ridership days were for an annual cherry blossom event, in which an average of 870,000 used the subway system.

Aerial pictures of the crowd size were not mentioned in the article.
