For those of us unaware of this rule, it states that it is “unethical” for members of the psychiatric community to publicly comment on the psychiatric health of public individuals, of whom they did not personally interview.
So, it explains why the Medical, and, Psychiatric communities have not released a public statement addressing their concerns of Mr. Donald J. Trump’s mental capacity to be President of the United States.
This is unfortunate and possibly dangerous for two reasons. By its omission, the public is unaware of a potential psychiatric problem with the Republican Candidate, and, may assume that there is no potential problem. And, let it be known, there is major concern within the psychiatric community regarding Mr. Trump’s psychiatric health, and, his ability to officially execute the duties of the Presidency.
Physician Forum believes that all candidates for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency, as well as proposed nominees for Speaker of the House, undergo unbiased Medical and Psychiatric evaluations as a necessary part of their “vetting” process. This information needs to be made available to the voters as part of their decision making process.
As for now, The Goldwater Rule has resulted in silencing the voices of those professionals most capable of rendering important information regarding the emotional health of a major political party candidate for the presidency.
Physician Forum believes this is a dangerous consequence of the Goldwater Rule, that now needs to be rectified.
